Massena Friends of the Nature Center offer weekly guided hikes

MASSENA -- The Friends of the Nature Center in Massena have special programs planned for families and children during the summer months. During August, weekly guided hikes will be offered on Monday afternoons, Tuesdays and Thursdays will be regular “Nature Day Camps” and Friday evenings will offer weekly “Campfire Cooking Programs.” Pre-registration is required for all programs.

• Monday’s Guided Hikes will begin at 1pm at the trailhead. Participants are invited to bring out a picnic lunch to enjoy beforehand. This program is free of charge.

• Friday’s Campfire Cooking will be held at the trailhead from 7-8 p.m.. A different campfire dessert will be made each week. A donation of $2 per person is suggested. All materials will be supplied. All ages are invited! Rain will cancel these programs.

• Aug. 3 “Cake in an Orange”

• Aug. 10 “Campfire Éclairs”

• Aug. 17 “Baked Apples”

• Aug. 24 “ Leftovers”

• Nature Day Camps are for children ages 5-10 who love to be out-of-doors. The whole program will be held outside on the trails, including lunch. Each day will focus on a special theme which children will explore by going on a hike, playing games and learning to use naturalist tools, such as binoculars. Participants must come dressed for the weather and bring a lunch and drink. Only pouring rain and storms will cancel these programs and they are free of charge. Class size is limited to 15, so early pre-registration is strongly encouraged. They will be held on the following dates, from 10am-12pm:

• Aug. 7 “Orienteering Basics”

• Aug. 9 “Creepy Crawlies”

• Aug. 14 “Rocks and Minerals”

• Aug. 16 “Flying Monkeys” (Bats)

• Aug. 21 “Weather or not”

• Aug. 23 “Close up with Nature”
