MASSENA -- Massena Central High School will stage its production of “The King and I” Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. both nights.
A matinee showing will be staged at 1:30 p.m. Saturday as well.
More than 100 high school students and parents are involved in the production, said a press release from the school.
Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s fifth musical, “The King and I” is based on Margaret Landon's novel, “Anna and the King of Siam” which was published in 1944. That book is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s.
The musical tells the story of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country and the love story between them. The musical premiered on Broadway on March 29, 1951.

The School Children Ensemble includes Briella Tressa, Nevaeh Gardner, Ava Thompson, Andrew David, Aiden Steenberg, Mason Phelix, Chase Cameron, Mackenzie Oldenburgh, Jordan DuBray, Devan Butterfield, Samantha Arney, Alivia Morris, Ella Tusa, Austin Hardy, Kaitlyn Premo, Lauren Henning, Ella Matejick, Gwendolynn Austin, Chloe Thompson, Kellon Lincoln, Madeline Tusa, Jocelyn Stowell, Juliana Miller and Alyssa Fountaine.
Tickets, costing $11, are available online at mchsmusical.com and at the stage box office on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4-6 p.m.
