POTSDAM -- Another Market Street storefront here will close soon.
The Stewart’s Shop store at 79 Market St. will shut its doors Sunday, Oct. 15.
Store #238, a long-time feature at the corner of Market Street and Sandstone Drive, is being closed due to a changing market which favors quick access and a grab-and-go food business, said a corporate representative when reached by phone Thursday.
“The decision to close a store is not taken casually,” said Maria D’Amelia, corporate spokesperson. “We really understand customers who are loyal to their neighborhood shop.”
However, D’Amelia said difficult access at the busy corner, combined with the smaller size of the shop made it hard to maintain.
“Customers want to get in and get out,” she said. The corporation is seeing an increase in its food service business, the spokesperson said.
“There is a lot of that grab and go mentality. That’s where we really see growth,” D’Amelia said.
Store #238 was due for a gas tank upgrade and replacement, and the corporation was weighing the investment in the tank replacement with the continued viability of the store there, D’Amelia said.
Stewart’s operates another store on the other side of the village at 26 Maple St., which features easier access. It will remain open.
All the partners who wish to continue working for the company will be relocated, said D’Amelia, either to the Maple Street shop or another store.
“We will find a spot for them,” D’Amelia said. In addition, milk club cards from Store #238 will be accepted at Maple Street.
The building and lot on Market Street will be sold or leased, the spokesperson said.
D’Amelia said the corporation is grateful for the Market Street customers, their years of business and their loyalty to the store, and hopes those customers will continue to do business with the company at their Maple Street location.
