MALONE -- Chess players from all over the North Country will be in Malone May 31 for the Upstate NY Open Chess Championships  at Franklin Academy High School. The tournament promises to showcase a number of talented players traveling from all corners of the North Country and lower Quebec.

The event is open to all ages and features three age divisions including 12 and under, 13-17, 18 and up. The tournament offers $900 in prizes to the top six players in each division.

Additional prize money is available to the top team in each division, although players may enter the event as individuals as well if they have no team.

Teams may have up to five members.

“The Open is something that the kids and I always look forward to. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, catch up with old friends, and play some great games. The competition is intense but it’s a light-hearted and fun atmosphere that everyone really seems to enjoy,” Malone Club Coordinator Matthew Rogers said.

Any persons interested in obtaining further information on the events may contact Rogers by email at mr92243@yahoo.com or call 518-353-6676. All players are asked to pre-register by Friday May 30.
