MADRID – The annual St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers’ Madrid Canoe Regatta is set for Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, on the Grasse River.
Rough camping facilities and a playground are available at the community center and park.
During the events of the weekend, pros, amateur marathoners and recreational paddlers will race and compete, or just enjoy themselves and their craft on the water.
There are typically several pro and amateur races, including a C-1 Pro Sprint, a nine-mile amateur marathon for canoes and kayaks, other marathons of 13 and 16 miles, and the six-mile recreational race.
There are also races for solo canoe, tandem canoe, and war canoes.
In other St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers events this season, the Third-Wednesday Biathlons on the Little River in Canton continue June 20, July 18 and Aug. 15. The duathlons have competitors first running 1.25 miles, then paddling about two miles, then running again for 1.25 miles. Signups are at the boat launch on Park Street at 6 p.m. Races begin at 6:30 p.m. It’s free.
And on Labor Day weekend – also Heuvelton’s Homecoming Weekend -- is the 30th annual Remington II Race, six miles from Rensselaer Falls to Heuvelton in the morning Saturday, Sept. 1 on the Oswegatchie River. There are two rapids where racers choose to either paddle through or carry around.
There are many recreational classes, with different events for men, women and mixed teams. There are separate events according to the age of paddlers and solo or tandem canoes.
