Luminary vigil to be held at SUNY Canton to honor the departed

CANTON -- SUNY Canton will holding a luminary vigil to help honor departed friends and loved ones at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, on the college’s turf field.

Those interested are invited to submit commemorative notes to accompany each light.

“We originally designed this event to correspond with Veterans Day,” said Director of Major Gifts Peggy S. Levato. “We received significant interest in making it an overall remembrance ceremony. The college has designated lights for the victims of the Oct. 31 attack in New York City and the recent Las Vegas shooting.”

The memorial is free and open to the extended community who wish to remember veterans, alumni, faculty, staff, students, family or friends who have passed away.

To leave a note, contact Levato by email, levatop@canton.edu, or assistant director of alumni affairs Elizabeth F. Gravlin, irvine10@canton.edu by Wednesday, Nov. 8. For more information, contact the college’s Alumni and Foundation office by phone at 315-386-7082.

The SUNY Canton Alumni Association partnered with the college’s Alumni Board, Greek organizations, the Student Veteran Association and the Student Activities Office to hold the ceremony. The college openly welcomes community participation.

The event will be moved into the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center if the weather prohibits the outdoor observance.
