Local Living Venture and WISER Center offering beekeeping business workshop in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- The Local Living Venture and SUNY Potsdam's WISER Center are collaborating to bring a Cornell University presentation for small-scale area beekeepers who may be interested in learning more about how to turn their honey, comb and other bee products into profits.

The workshop is entitled "Turning Your Beekeeping Hobby into a Business: What it does it mean, and what does it take?" and will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Stowell Hall (across from the Barrington Student Union) on the SUNY Potsdam campus.

The presentation will be made by Mary Kate Wheeler, who serves as the Applied Economic Analyst for the NYS Beekeeper Tech Team, based in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University.

The bulk of the talk focuses on what it means to go into business, what it takes, and whether or not it would be a good fit for particular apiarists.

During the presentation, participants can expect to review the differences between pursuing a hobby and managing a business, assess their strengths and motivations for going into business, learn about the core functions that make up a healthy business, identify important steps in the business planning process, and receive a to-do list of the tasks necessary to launch a startup honey business.

The event will be held in Stowell Hall, Room 211 at the WISER Center Greenhouse on the SUNY Potsdam (#8 on the campus map: www.potsdam.edu/about/visit/maps.) It is directly across from the Barrington Student Union & college store and 'Workshop Site' signs will be posted.

Free parking is available in Lot 9 at the nearby Performing Arts Center. Some Handicap Accessible spots are available directly between Stowell Hall and the Barrington Student Union. Pollinator-costumed attendants will be on site for guidance and attendees are encouraged to text or call 315-261-1926 if directions are needed.

The event is free and open to the public, though a suggested, free-will donation of $10 is appreciated to benefit the Local Living Venture bees and beekeeping programming. Donations are not required to attend.

This event is a collaboration between SUNY Potsdam's WISER Center and the Local Living Venture as part of their 2017 Pollinator Protection project.
