Peak Moment TV for April 2 and 3 on WCKN is “Undriving: Changing the Way We Think.”

Peak Moment host Janaia Donaldson explores the concept of becoming an “undriver” with Seattle’s Julia Field, at 7 p.m. both nights on cable channel 30.

You might want to be the first in your group to get your Undriver License by pledging to reduce automobile use.

Field’s creative project is changing how people think about getting around. She says, “Undriving means getting around without a car, so that could be busing, biking, walking, skateboarding, any combination of things and anything else that could get you there without a car. Telecommuting. One thing we talk about too, is ‘Skipping the Trip,’ which is a totally valid way of undriving as well.”

There is the idea that young people are just not that into cars anymore. Less than half of potential drivers age 19 or younger had a driver’s license in 2008, down from nearly two-thirds in 1998, according to Peak Moment TV. But since 32% of “millenials” (18-30 year olds) live in urban areas where the alternatives to the personal auto are greater, these young people can – and do – make other transportation choices.

Undrivers of all ages are jumping on the bandwagon, changing assumptions, and telling their empowered stories. Over 5,000 people have been Unlicensed and are rediscovering a whole new sense of community when they disconnect from the automobile. You can get your own Undriver License, or gift a friend, at http://undriving.org/.
