CANTON --Two local authors will be available at TAUNY on Tuesday, Aug. 7 to speak and sign books. At 5 p.m.

Silvana Gargione, author of St. Lawrence ABCs, will offer a book reading and craft for children ages 5-12. At 6 p.m.

Gargione and Tom French, author of River Views: A History of the 1000 Islands in 3-D, will each present on their books, followed by a book signing at 7 p.m.

Books will be available for purchase.

Both books are recent publications about the Thousand Islands. Rivers Views, released in 2011, was recently awarded a Silver Medal for Best Regional Book in the Northeast in the 2012 Independent Publishers Book Awards. St. Lawrence ABCs is new this summer.

Tom French will present on 19th Century 3-D photographs of St. Lawrence County and the 1000 Islands, including many images not in his book, and will include a brief history of stereography. The book comes with a special viewer that allows readers to view the 125-year-old photographs of the 1000 Islands in three dimensions. French will bring a number of viewers so the audience will have an opportunity to view the images in 3-D. The photographs were originally taken between 1870 & 1890 and show the 1000 Islands region at the birth of its tourist era.

Silvana Gargione, a lifelong summer resident of Wellesley Island, will speak about and answer questions on her nonfiction picture book. Featuring islands, boats, plants, and animals of the 1000 Islands region, St Lawrence ABCs is filled with interesting historical facts and beautiful color illustrations by Megan Gaffney, a summer resident of Bartlett Point, The book also includes an original map and a glossary of the islands, places, boats, and animals mentioned.

Tom French teaches English in Massena. His work has been featured in Mac|Life, Adirondack Life, Thousand Island Life.com, Stereo World, and The Watertown Daily Times. Gargione is an actor based in Los Angeles. St. Lawrence ABCs is her first publication.
