MASSENA -- Literacy of Northern New York will conduct a 12-hour tutor training at the Massena Library to train volunteers to tutor adults in basic literacy skills.
The course will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2; Thursday, April 4; Tuesday April 9 and Friday April 12.
During the four-day training, volunteers will learn about phonics, word patterns, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and fluency.
People who successfully complete the training will be matched with an adult to tutor. Tutors and students will meet in public places such as the library for an hour or two a week.
Literacy of Northern New York will assess each student’s literacy skills and recommend what books and materials to use.
Many people with low literacy skills are unable to fill out forms by themselves, work at dead-end jobs and can’t drive because they can’t read the questions on the permit test. Students want to learn to read so that they can obtain a job, advance to a higher paying job, read to their children or obtain a high school equivalency diploma.
There is a $25 fee for the training course textbook. Those who can’t pay the fee can borrow the textbook from the library.
Registration required through Literacy of Northern NY at 782-4270.
