GOUVERNEUR -- Literacy of Northern New York is training volunteers to work with adults who need help with basic reading skills from 1 to 4 p.m. in Gouverneur Library basement, 60 Church St.
Sessions will be June 17, 20 and 24. Volunteers must attend all three sessions. There is a $25 fee for the textbook or participants can borrow a book during the training. There are several students in the Gouverneur area waiting for tutors.
Volunteers will learn and practice techniques to help a student with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency and sounding out unfamiliar words. After completing the course, each volunteer will be assigned one adult student who needs help with reading skills. Literacy of Northern NY assesses each student’s reading level and provides the books and materials used during tutoring sessions. Tutors and students meet in public places, such as libraries.
Registration is required, 782-4270.
