GOUVERNUER -- Literacy of Northern New York will host a twelve-hour tutor training course at the Gouverneur Library.
Tutors will work with adults who need to improve their literacy skills.
The course will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 16; Thursday, April 18; Tuesday, April 23 and Friday, April 25.
Volunteers will learn about phonics, word patterns, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and fluency.
People who successfully complete the training will be matched with an adult who needs help with literacy skills. Tutors and students meet in public places for an hour or two a week.
Literacy of Northern New York assesses each student’s literacy skills and recommends which books and materials to use.
Many people with low literacy skills are unable to fill out forms by themselves, work low-skilled jobs and don’t drive because they can’t read the questions on the permit test.
Some students want to learn to read to obtain a job, advance to a higher paying job, read to their children or obtain a high school equivalency diploma.
The training course textbook costs $25, or participants may borrow the textbook from the library.
