MASSENA -- Lenten luncheons will return to St. John’s Church, 139 Main St., this year.
An ecumenical worship service will be held each Wednesday during Lent, from Feb. 20 through March 20, at noon.
The services are sponsored by the Greater Massena Ministerial Association, and a different clergy members will give the sermon each week. The services will consist of hymns, scripture readings and a brief message.
Lunch in the church social hall will follow each service at 12:30 p.m.
The suggested donation for lunch will be $5. The proceeds will be divided between the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, the Neighborhood Center Food Pantry and the monthly free community supper at the First Methodist Church.
The lunch menu will consist of a main dish, salad, bread, a beverage and a dessert. The meals will include:
• February 20 – Spanish rice and tossed salad, prepared by St. John’s Episcopal Church.
• February 27 – Goulash with molded Jell-O salad, prepared by the Congregational Church, chicken and vegetable casserole with cole slaw, prepared by Grace Methodist Church.
• March 13 – Macaroni and cheese with broccoli salad (without nuts) prepared by the First Methodist Church.
• March 20 – Ham and scalloped potatoes with tossed salad, prepared by the Catholic Churches.
The Lenten luncheon tradition was established in the early 1960's to allow workers at downtown businesses to attend a brief church service and have lunch, all in a one hour lunch break.
