CANTON -- St. Lawrence University will host Jessica Grahn from the University of Western Ontario, who will deliver the 2014 Church Lecture in Neuroscience at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in Hepburn Auditorium.
With degrees in neuroscience and piano performance, Grahn, an assistant professor of cognitive neuroscience, is curious about why humans have developed a musical culture (and why monkeys haven’t) and how musical or rhythmic ability relates to movement and language ability.
She investigates how music affects the brain and behavior, how music makes us move, how musical training changes brain structure and whether music can benefit patients with neurological disorders, including patients with Parkinson’s disease.
She is also investigating how music affects cognitive abilities such as memory or reasoning.
The lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
