POTSDAM -- Local Living Venture will offer a "Wrapping Your Hives for Winter" workshop with Luke Martin of Martin's Needham Road farm stand on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Needham Road farmstand. The stand and hives are 4.5 miles east of the Village of Potsdam, just off of U.S. Rt. 11B at 11 Needham Road.
Martin will sdiscuss successful techniques for wrapping bee hives for the winter. He will share ways of dealing with radiant heat and preventing deadly condensation in the hive using easily obtainable materials.
This workshop will specifically address the concern for proper circulation to prevent killing condensation while over-wintering. It is important that the top of the hive be allowed to "breathe," and preferred methods and materials will be shared.
Event organizers suggest bee head gear or more. The bees aren't likely to be active but it's better to be prepared. This workshop will be held outdoors, rain or shine, partially under cover but not entirely, so participants should dress accordingly. Bring drinking water and a note pad.
There is a suggested donation of $17/general public, $10/LLV bee group members, $30/couple and $7/students. Donations are requested to cover overhead expenses and to pay for future workshops.
Event organizers suggest making reservations at LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com or 347-4223 with the name of the event, a phone number(s), email address and the number attending. Walk-in's are welcome.
