MORRISTOWN -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is issuing a last call for entries to the upcoming St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament, set for Aug. 18 – 20.
Boys and girls ages 11-18 should register no later than the end of the business day on Tuesday, Aug. 16, in order to be a part of the popular event this year.
As of today, just over 100 young anglers are expected to be fishing a 30-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River next Friday and Saturday. The entry fee for the tournament remains the same as last year, $125, and covers all tournament-related activities including the Mort Backus & Sons Carp Fishing School on Thursday the 18th at the Madrid-Waddington Central School, and a casting contest later in the day.
All contestants register as individuals but can qualify for team prizes, too, if they also register as part of a team. A range of cash prizes and trophies are awarded in divisions for boys, girls, and teams, along with a grand champion cash prize.
All carp caught during the tournament are released back into the St. Lawrence River.
To download a registration form visit www.northcountryguide.com/Visiting/Fishing/JuniorCarpTournament, or call the chamber at 315-386-4000 to request a form.
There’s still time to volunteer as a marshal for the event, too. Marshals help with netting fish, give the young anglers pointers, assist with baiting and make sure everyone plays by the rules. It’s a great chance to help make the youngsters’ experience the best that it can be – all while being on the St. Lawrence River for two days.
All marshals must attend an orientation session; the final session is set for Thursday the 18th at 4 p.m. in the Donald Martin Civic Center in Waddington.
For more information on marshaling, contact Sue Casaday at the Chamber, 315-386-4000; or by email at scasaday@stlawrencecountychamber.org.
