Kick off meeting for SUNY Potsdam’s Relay For Life to be held Nov. 30

POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam is preparing for another Relay For Life to help in the battle against cancer, with its kickoff meeting for next year’s relay scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Barrington Student Union lobby.

This year’s theme is “Around the World,” as cancer affects people across the globe.

The kickoff meeting is when teams, especially team captains, can first sign up for the relay.

Last year, more than 700 people on 79 teams representing 63 groups raised $51,300 at SUNY Potsdam’s relay. The money raised will go to the American Cancer Society.

Event organizers are hoping to do even better this year, when Relay For Life returns to the Maxcy Field House on March 23 and 24. Student, faculty and community volunteers are encouraged to participate.

This year’s registration fee will remain at $10. Cash, check, credit card and Bear Express will be accepted.

Caregivers, cancer survivors and teams come together for an overnight community celebration of life and cancer survivorship in Relay for Life events around the country. The night honors cancer survivors and caregivers, and pays tribute to those who have lost their battles with cancer.

Teams of people from all walks of life will take turns walking or running around a track, relay-style, to raise funds to fight cancer.

All cancer survivors are invited to celebrate by participating in a reception and inspirational “Survivors’ Lap” to open the Relay For Life event.

This year, SUNY Potsdam invites area businesses, civic, church and community organizations to form a team and become a part of Relay For Life on the SUNY Potsdam campus.
