MASSENA -- Boys & Girls Club of Massena will host a Junior Olympic competition Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Massena Central High School.

In the spirit of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, kids 14 and under are invited to compete in a series of track and field events on the turf field.

The events include 100-meter and 400-meter dash, 100-meter relay, 3000-meter distance run, javelin throw, discus throw and other events for geared toward younger children.

“We wanted to get our area youth together for some healthy, active fun this summer,” said Debra Donatto, club chief professional officer and program director. “We thought that since the Summer Olympics was underway, we could encourage kids to compete in a mini replica of the worldwide competition, and in doing so, we could get them away from the electronics, get them moving, and possibly inspire them to learn about world events.”

Older teens can be part of the event by helping with the various stations, and will earn community service certificates from the club that can be used for their college portfolios, or help with job applications.

Registration for the competition will be on the turf at 9:30 a.m.

There is no cost to enter, but donations will be accepted.

Club officials anticipate opening of their permanent clubhouse on Bayley Road this fall.

“As renovations are being done over the summer, wheels are in motion to expand services to all area youth on a full time basis at the new facility, which was previously the old St. Joseph’s Recreational Hall,” Donatto said.
