POTSDAM -- The SUNY Potsdam Women's and Gender Studies Anne R. Malone Lecture Series will continue at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 with a talk given by Clarkson University professor Dr. Annegret D. Staiger entitled "Inside a German Mega-Brothel: What the New Legal Regimes Tell Us About Sex and Commerce," in the Raymond Hall eighth floor dining room on the SUNY Potsdam campus.
Staiger will discuss a research project she began in 2007 on prostitution in Germany. She went from interviewing and writing about sex trafficking victim advocacy groups for the Johns Hopkins University Protection Project to conducting field interviews with various brothel operators in 2008 and 2009.
Staiger eventually gained access to a German mega-brothel, the fastest growing type of prostitution establishment in that country, where she conducted two months of ethnographic fieldwork this summer.
The Women's and Gender Studies Lecture Series is sponsored by a grant from the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley and is given in memory of Dr. Anna Malone. Upcoming talks will focus on poetry of the Spanish Civil War, how minority instructors confront race issues in the classroom, Amish women in business, love and identity in the age of Obama and community service learning.
