RENSSELAER FALLS -- Indian Creek Nature Center, County Route 14, will offer several outdoors programs for the public including bug hunts, canoeing adventures and bird watching.
Birding at the Nature Center will be held June 3 and Aug. 15 at 7:30 a.m. Participants will view a variety of species on a hike through marsh, wetland and forest habitat. “Dragonflies and Damselflies” will take place from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, led by Jan Trybula of SUNY Potsdam. Take a walk to view the omnipresent predators of most freshwater environments. Nets will be available for closer examination. At least 20 different species have been identified at the Nature Center. “Geological Features of the Nature Center and the North Country” is slated for Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to noon with John Bursnall. He will cover the geology of the Nature Center as well as some road stops in the surrounding area. Info: John at 344-7245.
Take a leisurely walk to view and discuss butterflies from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, with Steven Daniel. Discussions will include its life history, plants they lay their eggs on, where they get nectar, and special adaptations that help them survive. Moths and other insects will be discussed depending on that is seen on the hike. Info: Steven at 585-732-7095.
A canoe/kayak trip is set for Sunday, June 28, from 9 a.m. until noon with Tom Vandewater and Mark Lee. Bring a canoe or kayak, life jacket and whistle tot eh DEC’s middle access road on County Route 14. This is a 1.6 miles from State Highway 68 and 2.5 miles from Rensselaer Falls. A family campfire Friday event is planned for Friday, July 17, from 7:30 until 10 p.m. led by Carol Zimmerman. There will be campfire songs, stories, nighttime activities and s’mores will be provided. Info: Carol at 212-2800.
