COLTON -- “I Love a Piano” opened on the Colton-Pierrepont Central School stage Thursday, July 16, with the cast singing and dancing Irving Berlin songs from the 1910s into the 1950s.

The cast, pit and crew represent community theatre, showcasing talent from area schools, colleges and the community in general.

During intermission when audience members were asked about their favorite songs, several said “Cheek to Cheek” from 1935 which opens with "Heaven, I'm in heaven, and my heart beats so that I can hardly speak...”

Others mentioned “Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning,” written earlier in 1918, giving a comic perspective on military life. The last song before intermission, “God Bless America,” was the signature song for Kate Smith.

In the lobby after the show, others mentioned the spirited “Anything You Can Do,” composed by Irving Berlin for the 1946 Broadway musical “Annie Get Your Gun.”

Conductor Tim Savage has brought together seasoned veterans of the North Country, who, as he says “understand the stylistic changes needed for this show.” In addition to Savage, the pit includes Paul Buell (trumpet), Peter McCoy (trombone), Jill Roberts (reeds), Jill Savage (violin), Gerry McGrath (piano), John Dufore (guitar), Hannah Roberts (bass) and Kylie Stenger (percussion).

Two more shows are planned, Friday, July 17, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door; or in advance at White’s General Store and The TAUNY Center. The prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. There is open seating for all shows.

The performances of “I Love a Piano” are being presented by The Sunday Rock Legacy Project, a collaboration among the Colton Historical Society, Colton-Pierrepont Central School and Grasse River Players.
