Hundreds of high school seniors in Canton-Potsdam area picking up diplomas tonight, tomorrow

Across the North Country hundreds of students will end a chapter in their lives as they claim the diplomas they have spent more than a decade working toward.

Schools throughout the greater Canton-Potsdam area will be holding commencement ceremonies his weekend.

Potsdam High School

Approximately 104 students will walk the stage Friday at 7 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall.

Valedictorian Lee Buchanan will address the class as will salutatorian Bonnie Smyth. High school English teacher Jake Roberts will also speak to the class.

Superintendent Patrick Brady will hand out awards with assistance from Board of Education President Jim Bunstone. Principal Joan Chambers will present the class.

Canton High School

Class President Katelyn Lumbard will speak to her classmates at the Hugh C. Williams High School graduation ceremony Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Lawrence University’s Appleton Arena.

Approximately 85 students are expected to get their diplomas.

Awards will be presented by Canton High School Principal Mark Passamonte, with assistance from board member Barbara Beekman and Superintendent William Gregory.

Norwood-Norfolk Central School

Valedictorian Emily Gonthier and Salutatorian Jessica Harvey will offer speeches to 84 of their fellow students as they walk the stage Saturday at 7 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall for the Class of 2012 commencement ceremony.

Guest speaker Jane Squires will also address the class and audience.

High school principal Robin Sutter will hand out awards.

Colton-Pierrepont

Principal Randy Johnson will host the ceremony as 21 students graduate Friday at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Valedictorian Shayla Williams will address the class.

Salutatorian Erick Muller will also speak to his classmates.

Board president Shelli Prespare-Weston and superintendent Joseph Kardash will hand out awards. A class slide-show will also be presented.

Parishville-Hopkinton

Valedictorian Monique Jenkinson, and salutatorian Machaela Coventry will speak on behalf of Parisvhille-Hopkinton Class of 2012. at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the high school auditorium.

Class President Elisabeth Lavelle will also address the graduates.

Board member Ward Remington and Timothy Zellweger will hand out awards with help from Joshua Wilson, the son of board member Steve Wilson who recently died. Wilson will be handing diplomas in memory of his father.

Madrid-Waddington

High school Principal Joseph Ruddy will host his final graduation ceremony at Madrid-Waddington Central School as he retires from his career of more than 30 years in education this month.

Co-valedictorians Chistopher Naccari and Elizabeth Ruddy will speak on behalf the 46 graduates. Salutatorian Sierra Knight will also address the class.

The ceremony will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Awards and diplomas will be presented by Ruddy with assistance from school board members.

St. Lawrence Central

Approximately 76 students will graduate June 22 at 6 p.m. in the West Lawn at St. Lawrence Central. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held in the gymnasium.

Valedictorian Kimberly Oakes and Salutatorian Megan Frary will address their classmates.

Class President Gabrielle Durant will also give a speech. Superintendent Stephen Putnam, Board of Education President James Lattimer and Principla Chripstopher Rose will present the awards.

Hermon-Dekalb Central School

Hermon-Dekalb Central School students will walk the stage Friday June 22 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Approximately 31 students are expected to collect their diplomas.

Names of the valedictorian and salutatorian were not available at press time.
