CANTON -- Hundreds of children dressed as superheroes, monsters and ghouls are expected to celebrate Halloween at Village Park Oct. 24 for a parade, costume contest and pumpkin decorating as part of “Phantoms in the Park.”

“It’s a good time for the littler kids…some parents use this as their Halloween celebration and don’t take kids out on Halloween night,” Canton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sally Hill.

New this year, the costume contest will take place prior to the parade and children will decorate pumpkins in the park. The contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.

“The youngsters are usually pretty tuckered out by the time the parade is over so we decided to do the costume contest first,” Hill said.

Children will have their costumes judged by students from St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton. Past categories have included scariest, most original, funniest, most patriotic, cutest and most creative use of recycled materials.

Chamber gift certificates will be awarded to the winners.

“This keeps money local and kids usually can find something they want,” she said.

Mike Livingston of DeKalb will once again donate pumpkins to the event. Kids can decorate pumpkins in the park at tables that will be set up.

The parade will start “as close to 1 p.m. as possible,” Hill said.

Kids will parade around downtown collecting treats, goodies and more from local businesses.

Some non-downtown businesses and organizations expected include the Canton Volunteer Fire Department, The Canton Animal Clinic, Smiles Associates and SeaComm Federal Credit Union.

“The animal clinic usually has some treats for dogs and I think Smiles is handing out toothbrushes,” Hill said.

Kids can tour the fire truck and firefighters usually

College students will help to direct traffic to keep things safe, Hill said.

There will also be some games for kids to play, spooky music and the park will be decorated for the holiday.

“Hopefully we will get dry weather so we can decorate with blow-up spiders, witches and Frankenstein decorations which are donated by the VFW,” Hill said.
