Hospice hosting Memorial Day celebration in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley served nearly 100 veterans at the end of life in 2015.

For the first time, Hospice is hosting a Memorial Day Celebration to pay tribute to their veteran patients who have died. The event is set for Friday, May 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hospice Center, 6805 U.S. Highway 11.

The driveway to the office will be lined on both sides with 85 American flags representing those veteran patients and the flags will remain on display throughout the holiday weekend.

During the event, there will be a remembrance presentation and barbeque-style luncheon in the Memorial Garden, as well as a dedication ceremony for their new commercial flagpole that was installed at the front entrance of the building last fall with the help of volunteers from the Edward C. Seymour VFW Post in Canton, Lowe’s Home Improvement #2250, and other community donors.

The display of the American flag now serves as a symbol to patients, staff, volunteers, and community members of the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans each time they enter the building.

Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley is a Level 4 Partner of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s We Honor Veterans program; one of only a handful of hospices in New York State to have achieved this.

Hospice invites members of local Veteran’s Service Organizations to attend this event for an opportunity to see first-hand the impact of Hospice services on veterans in St. Lawrence County.
