MASSENA -- The Orchestra of Northern New York (ONNY) will perform a Christmas concert at Massena high school again this year, titled “A Holiday Celebration.”
The concert will be held Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Massena’s high school auditorium.
Last December, ONNY and the Potsdam Community Chorus performed excerpts from Handel’s Messiah at Sacred Heart Church. In addition to the orchestra, which is celebrating its 25th season, the concert will also feature the Massena High School Mixed Chorus, directed by Christopher Lincoln. The chorus will perform several works with the orchestra, including the featured piece, “The Many Moods of Christmas,” by Robert Russell Bennett.
“We are so thrilled to be bringing the Orchestra of Northern New York back to Massena”, said Massena Music Friends (MMF) president Paul Haggett. “We’re even more thrilled our local students will have the unique opportunity to sing with professional musicians,” he said.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit Massena Music Friends, whose main goal is to provide funding to supplement the existing Massena school music program. The concert is sponsored by local businesses and the Massena Music Friends.
Haggett said the Performing Arts Committee created by Massena Mayor James Hidy that brought the ONNY Holiday concert to Massena last year, did an outstanding job. “Last year’s show was sold out”, Haggett said. The 2011 concert resulted in a donation of over $1,700 to MMF.
Tickets for the concert are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Seasons Specialty Gifts, W. Orvis Street; Phil and Jackie’s gift shop, Main Street and the new Massena Chamber of Commerce office, Church Street. Tickets are also available online or over the phone from Community Performance Series, www2.potsdam.edu/cps/events.html or 267-2277, and at the box office at Snell Theater, SUNY Potsdam.
In addition to The Many Moods of Christmas, the concert will feature performances of Christmas season favorites like Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and Handel’s Halleuia Chorus.
The Orchestra of Northern New York will participate in another holiday concert Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. in Hosmer Hall, SUNY Potsdam.
