'Hokum Poke ’em Cabaret/Decameron Blues' to be presented in Canton Wednesday to Saturday

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University will host performances of “Hokum Poke ’em Cabaret,” or the “Decameron Blues,” beginning at 8 p.m. each night from Wednesday, April 27, to Saturday, April 30, at the Edson R. Miles Black Box Theater located in the Griffiths Arts Center.

This variety of mostly blues songs and selected tales come from a collection of novellas, The Decameron, by the 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. The tales have been adapted for the stage by Kirk Fuoss, Maurer associate professor of rhetoric and communication arts. The script was translated by Wayne A. Rebhorn.

Hokum Poke ‘em Cabaret, or The Decameron Blues, oscillates back and forth between songs performed in a cabaret style and bawdy tales from The Decameron, with each story staged in a different “signature” style.

The play is free, though tickets are required for admission due to limited seating in the Black Box Theater.

Box office hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, April 25 to 29. The phone number is 229-5748.
