CANTON -- St. Lawrence University, in conjunction with the campus’ Arts Collaborative, will welcome the Hip Hop Theatre’s production and workshop “Dreamscape,” Tuesday, March 14 and Wednesday March 15.
The play written by Rickerby Hinds, professor of playwriting at University of California-Riverside, reimagines the night of Dec. 28, 1998, when 19-year-old Tyisha Miller was shot by police officers in Riverside, Calif., and was left unconscious and bleeding in a car. Using elements of spoken word, dance and beatboxing, the production takes a critical look at the relationships between surveillance, race, the body and violence, walking the audience through the impact of the 12 bullets that killed “Myeisha Mills.”
“Dreamscape” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, in Gulick Theatre, which is located in St. Lawrence’s Noble Center.
On Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Griffiths Arts Center’s Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall, the Hip Hop Theatre production company will hold a workshop for non-actors, titled “Theatre of Privilege.”
Both events are free and open to the public.
