Hikes, ski trips, and outings highlight ADK winter activities

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club has planned a variety of hikes, ski trips and other outings this winter led by member volunteers.

They range from “Easy” to “Very Strenuous” and provide a good way to find new trails and make new acquaintances. Those participating should dress in layers and to be ready for sudden change in the weather.

To participate in an outing, contact the trip leader before the trip. More information is also available at www.adklaurentian.org.

The events include:

• Jan. 1 -- New Year's Day at Clarkson, traditional afternoon party at the Outdoor Lodge, early afternoon hiking, snowshoeing or skiing followed by a gathering in the lodge by 4 p.m.; bring hors d'oeuvre; contact John Barron, 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca

• Jan. 7 -- Cross-Country Ski for Beginners, Higley Flow State Park; explore the park and practice skiing techniques, easy and short; all welcome, especially beginners and children; contact John Barron, 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca.

• Jan. 14 -- Ski Robert Moses State Park and Massena Dike Trails while Birding, joint outing with NNY Audubon Society; fairly easy; contact Eileen Wheeler at 386-2482 or eiwheeler@yahoo.com

• Jan. 15 -- Wright Peak, high peak climb from the ADK Loj with beautiful views of the other peaks; seven miles round-trip, 2,400-foot elevation gain, very strenuous, about eight hours; minimum micro spikes/crampons and snowshoes; contact Brian Baston at 315-600-1282, brian.b.goode@gmail.com

• Jan. 21 -- Ski/Snowshoe to Grassy Pond, three-mile round trip near Paul Smiths; lunch at lean-to and look for signs of browsing moose; families welcome, fairly easy; contact Duncan or Lois Cutter, 328-4675 or dcutter1@twcny.rr.com

• Jan. 28 -- Ski to Hedgehog Pond, 10-mile round trip ski east of Cranberry Lake, with possible extension to Hedgehog Bay; strenuous; contact Tom Ortmeyer at 265-8219 or tortmeye@gmail.com

• Feb. 4 -- Ski and Soup at SUNY Canton trails in the morning, then at the Spencers’ trails after lunch; bring sandwich; fairly easy; contact Armond or Ann Spencer at 379-1383 or aaspencer@verizon.net.

• Feb. 5 -- Winter Climb of Street and Nye, attempt to climb both, about 8-1/2 miles, 2,800-foot elevation gain, potentially difficult winter mountaineering; participants should have mountain snowshoes with good crampons, warm waterproof boots, and appropriate winter layers; very strenuous; contact Toni Towle/Peter Blood 613-387-2829 or blackrapids@ripnet.com.

• Feb. 5 -- Leonard Pond Cross-Country Ski and Birdwatch, five miles round trip, wide, level trail in mixed forest, bring binoculars and lunch, fairly easy, joint trip with Audubon Society; contact Eileen Wheeler at 386-2482, eiwheeler@yahoo.com.

• Feb. 11 -- Hike/Snowshoe Gothics via Beaver Meadow Falls Trail, from the Ausable Club at 8 a.m.; 11-plus miles round trip, very strenuous; contact Mike McLean at 262-2564 or mpmclean@twcny.rr.com

• Feb. 12 -- Owls Head Mountain Snowshoe, Long Lake; 6.2-mile round-trip climb with steep scramble at the top; 1,100 vertical feet with great views from fire tower; strenuous; contact Dana Chudzinski at 528-3468 or chudski63@yahoo.com

• Feb. 18 -- Ski to Raquette Falls, starting at Axton Landing near Tupper Lake, nine miles round trip, some short hills, strenuous; contact John Barron 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca

• Feb. 26 -- Snowshoe St. Regis Mountain, “fire tower challenge” mountain with wonderful views. 6.8 mile round-trip with 1,265-foot elevation gain, strenuous; contact Blair Madore 265- 0602 or madorebf@potsdam.edu

• Feb. 29 -- Leap Day Bushwhack to unnamed mountain near Mountain Pond, Paul Smiths, with snowshoeing across Mt. Pond, round trip about 2 miles, fairly easy, followed by dinner; contact Carol LaDue (rladue2@twcny.rr.com) or Geri Ames (geriames@gmail.com)

• March 3 -- Azure Mountain Snowshoe, two miles round-trip and almost 1,000-foot elevation gain; for novice or expert; moderate; contact Gene and Carolyn Kaczka, 265-4806 or gckaczka@twcny.rr.com

• March 10 -- Skiing in Gatineau Park, on well-maintained, track-set trails a short distance north of Ottawa; confidence on moderately steep hills required; 15 miles round-trip; 1,000-foot elevation gain, strenuous; contact John Barron 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca

• March 11 -- McKenzie Mountain Snowshoe, from trailhead on Whiteface Inn Road, 7.2-mile round tripi, climb of 1,940 vertical feet, great 360-degree views; strenuous to very strenuous; contact Dana Chudzinski at 528-3468 or at chudski63@yahoo.com
