COLTON -- The Higley Association’s Round the Islands Canoe and Kayak Race is set for Saturday, Aug. 4.

The popular family-oriented race will begin and end at Brookfield Power’s “Big Rock” picnic area and boat launch off Pine Road., off of Gulf Road, in the Town of Colton.

The adult and youth races will take paddlers on a scenic tour of a portion of Higley Flow. The race takes paddlers over a four-mile course, and the new child’s race is one mile long.

It is a recreational race with a class for every paddler. There are six classes with more added on race day to accommodate all boaters. The emphasis of the race is on family and fun.

Registration is 9 to 10 a.m. The race begins at 10 to take advantage of the quieter water and cooler temperatures in the morning. Events should wrap up by 12:30 p.m.

In addition to awards for first through third place finishes, this year there will be three special prizes.

The Veteran Paddler Award, given in memory of Charlie Palmer, former Higley resident, avid paddler, adventurer and mentor for countless youth goes to the best finish by a paddler over 60.

The second award is presented by the Higley Association in memory of Phyllis Baker, who served as secretary-treasurer of the organization for four decades, to the youth best exemplifying the spirit of the race.

The third is the Chris Murphy Memorial Plaque in tribute to Chris, who was an annual competitor whose love of paddling and spirit of comraderie set the mood of the race for many years.

Following the race there are games on the water including pedal boat and paddlers’ slaloms.

The morning’s activities conclude with hot dogs, soda and cookies for all. Spectators are welcome.

The Higley Association is an active organization of area campers and landowners in the Higley Flow area, sponsoring several area events including fireworks, Fire on the Lake, Youth Fishing Derby, potluck dinners, and the Higley Hustle winter cross-country ski race.
