COLTON -- The Higley Association will sponsor the “Round the Islands Canoe and Kayak Race” Saturday, Aug. 6 at Brookfield Power’s “Big Rock” picnic area and boat launch off Pine Road.

Adult and youth races will take paddlers on a scenic tour of a portion of Higley Flow. The “fledgling” child’s race is one mile with the longer race four miles.

The recreational race will offer six classes for every level of paddler. Emphasis of the race is on family and fun.

In addition to awards for first through third place finishes, two special prizes will be awarded. The Veteran Paddler Award for the best finish by a paddler over age 60 will be given in memory of Charlie Palmer, a former Higley resident, avid paddler, adventurer and mentor for countless youth. The second award will be presented to the youth best exemplifying the spirit of the race by the Higley Association in memory of Phyllis Baker, who served as secretary-treasurer of the organization for four decades.

Games on the water including pedal boat and paddler’s slaloms are planned after the race. The morning’s activities conclude with hot dogs, soda and cookies for all. Spectators are invited.

Registration will be from 9 to 10 a.m. and the race will begin at 10 to take advantage of the quieter water and cooler temperatures. Events should wrap up by 12:30 p.m.

The Higley Association, composed of area campers and landowners in the Higley Flow area, sponsors several other events throughout the year, including fireworks, Fire on the Lake, a youth fishing derby, potluck dinners and the Higley Hustle winter cross country ski race.
