COLTON – The Higley Association will sponsor the family-oriented Round the Islands Canoe and Kayak Race on Saturday, Aug. 7, beginning and ending at Brookfield Powers’ “Big Rock” picnic area and boat launch off Pine Rd.

Registration will be from 9 to 10 a.m. The race will begin at 10 a.m.

The adult and youth races will take paddlers on a scenic tour of a portion of Higley Flow. The “fledgling” child’s race is one mile in length with the longer race proceeding over a four-mile course.

Six classes will be racing with more added on race day to accommodate all boaters. The emphasis of the race is on family and fun.

In addition to awards for first through third place finishes, there are two special prizes: the Charlie Palmer award or the Veteran Paddler award, is given for the best finish by a paddler over the age of 60; the second award is offered by Donald DeWeerdt, long time competitor in the Veteran’s and Family classes, to the youth best exemplifying the spirit of the race.

Following the race, games will be held on the water including pedal boat and paddler’s slaloms.

Hot dogs, soda and cookies will be provided.
