MASSENA -- The Harvest Festival returns Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for its eighth year and this time will include activities in the east side of town.

In addition to the usual run of events downtown, there will be simultaneous events at the East Orvis Street park across from Laneuville’s, Massena Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nathan LaShomb said.

“We’re trying to highlight more of the East Orvis Street corridor,” LaShomb said.

Events on that side of town will include a wine tasting at Laneuville’s wine and liquor store, a harvest-theme backdrop for pictures at the Blue Spruce Motel and bounce houses at the park.

At the end of the day, there will be simultaneous kid-friendly, Halloween movie screenings at dusk at both the East Orvis park and Veterans Park on Andrews Street.

Leading up to that will be the usual goings-on downtown, but this year will include a haunted house.

“We’ve got the haunted theater walkthrough at the downtown theater, the former Shine Theater,” LaShomb said.

Admission to that is $5 for adults and $3 for ages 12 and under. The proceeds will go to the Massena Theater Association to help restore the building to its former glory.

Main Street will be blocked from Andrews Street to East Orvis Street.

The Town Hall parking lot will be a “Kids Zone,” with crafts including glow-in-the-dark and color-changing slime.

“There’s some really cool crafts this year,” LaShomb said, adding that he “can’t wait” to participate in the slime-making.

There will also be bounce houses and a Boys and Girls Club of Massena costume march.

“We ask [the vendors] to have candy do kids can trick-or-treat,” LaShomb said.

People can enter jack-o-lanterns for a pumpkin carving contest. Participants have to buy their own pumpkin. They can submit their carved creations at Verville’s Flower Shop, East Orvis Street, for a $2 fee.

There will be vendors downtown starting at 11 a.m. LaShomb said they are asked to stay until at least 4 p.m., but some may opt to hang around longer.

There will be an entertainment stage in front of the old Seacomm. Line dancing will start at 11 a.m. The Drew Crew Cloggers will take the stage at 11:45 a.m. Old Country will perform at set at 1 p.m. The trio includes standup bass, fiddle and drum. Atom Ghost plays at 2:15 p.m., followed by Alternative Motive at 3:30 p.m.

Raffle announcements will go from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. They will names winners of the chamber scavenger hunt, with the victors getting two Cape Air tickets. They will also award winners of the chamber’s “Raise the Roof” raffle. Prizes include an Apple watch, iPad mini and Macbook Air. Pumpkin carving contest winners will also be announced.

Juggernaut Agenda will be the last performance from 6 to 7 p.m.

The scavenger hunt is ongoing through the day of Harvest Fest. People can get maps at the chamber office, 16 Church St.

“I want to encourage everyone to come out. If they feel there may not be something for them, they need to think differently. We have things for kids, teenagers and adults alike,” LaShomb said.
