POTSDAM -- “Hankfest” will celebrate its 10th anniversary during this year’s event, slated for Aug. 8.

It began in 2005 when Gregory Bouchard formed the Potsdam Charity Hankfest Group.

The group had two goals, to honor the contributions to country music by Hank Williams Sr. and to raise money for local charities.

Each year the event itself has grown as well as the donations to the charities. Last year, the event raised $700 for the Potsdam Library. In addition, the group expanded its community reach by hosting an Easter party for local kids.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the pavilion in Sandstoner Park near the Pine Street Arena starting at 1 p.m.

The event was held at this location last year and it was well received by those in attendance, according to event organizers.

“It is a shadier location, has playground equipment nearby, restroom facilities, and has closer parking,” Bouchard said. “There are even a couple grills available if attendees wish to use them.”

Each year, Hankfest highlights a specific country music performer. This year the special focus is on the life and music of country music legend Johnny Cash. In addition, there will be a small memorial to cast members of the Dukes of Hazzard television show that have passed away.

Oshier Country Band and other local country performers will provide music. There will be door prizes, raffles, and a special 10th anniversary cake.

This year’s event will be raising funds toward a music scholarship to be awarded in 2016 to a Potsdam Central School student pursuing a career in music.
