MADRID -- The Local Living Venture invites the public to visit their handmade ultra light canoe raffle booth in the Artisan's Showcase at the Madrid Dam Music Series, featuring original tunes and sing-alongs with bluegrass radio host Barb Heller, this Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 6 p.m.
The 12- to 14-pound translucent canoe will be on display and stories of building it will be told. The wood used came from all local sources and the lightweight but heavy duty fabric that covers it is the same material used on ultralight glider aircraft.
The canoe was made by attendees of a workshop in May, coordinated as part of a continuing series of "Resourceful Living Workshops" held by the Local Living Venture.
The workshop was led by William Sommerfield of the Paddler's Workshop in Massena and took place at Everett BoatWorks shop near Crary Mills.
This is the 157th such boat built by Mr. Sommerfield, who leads classes to teach others how to make them.
Most often he leads groups from various civic groups and non-profits in building the canoes, which can then be raffled to support those organizations.
The music series is held in the Madrid Community Park on the river.
There is free parking and directional signage is posted on Route 345 in town.
More information on the ultralight canoe can be found at www.LocalLivingVenture/content/raffle.
