“The barn quilt trail initiative has attracted so much attention in the north county and beyond and has resulted in overwhelming enthusiasm and participation by the Hammond community,” says Lisa Sarfaty, spokesperson and chair of the Hammond Barn Quilt Trail Committee. “That we have over 40 barn quilts being worked on or completed this first year speaks to the community interest this endeavor has received. We are fortunate that the leadership of both the Town of Hammond and the Village of Hammond have been extremely supportive of this project of rural revival through art to celebrate the heritage of our community,” says Sarfaty.
The barn quilts “comprise a significant link for St. Lawrence County to claim a spot in the country-wide barn quilt trail that has over 7,000 quilts spread throughout 48 U.S. states and Canada,” according to a news release from the barn quilt committee.
They in size from two-feet square to eight-feet square and have names such as “Mariner’s Compass,” “Hammond Heritage,” “Ohio Star,” “Made with Pride,” “American Freedom” and “First Villager.”
The Hammond Barn Quilt Trail project and Committee began in 2014 as a plan for community revitalization and to promote tourism in Hammond and St. Lawrence County.
