CANTON -- St. Lawrence University’s Department of Sociology and the Center for Teaching and Learning will host guest speaker Michelle Annette Meyer at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Hepburn Hall 218.
The title of Meyer’s presentation is "Unnatural Disasters: Extreme Events, Social Stratification and the Environment."
Her work focuses on the intersection of social inequality and disasters.
The event is open to the public.
Meyer, who is an assistant professor of sociology at Louisiana State University, researches and teaches a variety of issues related to climate change displacement of populations. She focuses on disaster resilience and mitigation, environmental sociology and community sustainability, and the interplay between environmental conditions and social vulnerability.
In addition to her faculty position at LSU, Meyer is also a research associate with the Center for Disaster and Risk Analysis at Colorado State University and an assistant research scientist with the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center at Texas A&M University.
