“Great Strides” walk May 7 to coincide with Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

OGDENSBURG -- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Central New York Chapter will host a “Great Strides” walk May 7 at 10 a.m. at the Dobisky Center.

It will coincide with other similar events around the county, marking what the group calls “Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.”

“Great Strides is crucial to our lifesaving efforts, and every walker who joins us makes a difference for people with cystic fibrosis,” said Mike Bellinger, volunteer chair for the CF Foundation’s Central New York Chapter. “We are making tremendous progress in fighting this devastating disease, and we are grateful for our volunteers and sponsors, who are a vital part of this effort.”

Funds raised through “Great Strides” will help those who have cystic fibrosis. Fifty years ago, most children with the disease did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are living much longer, the group said.

The 2015 national goal of Great Strides is to raise $43 million nationwide to help support for CF research, education and care.

An estimated 30,000 adults and children in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide have cystic fibrosis. It causes debilitating lung infections that lead to premature death. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of a defective CF gene, the foundation said.
