CANTON – Sam Chirwa and Grace Chiumia, field directors from Malawi, Africa, of the Women Of Grace Widows’ Fund, will be visiting Canton on Jan. 8 and 9 and Ogdensburg on the 10th.

They will be speaking at the 10 a.m. worship service at the Canton First Presbyterian Church at 17 Park St. on Sunday.

A potluck dinner will be held in their honor at the church at 6 p.m. on Monday.

A potluck dinner will also be held at the Ogdensburg First Presbyterian at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 before a short visit to Saranac Lake and a stop in Washington D.C. before their return to Malawi.

The public is welcome to attend these events to learn more about their work with widows and orphans in Malawi.

Since May 2009, Grace has represented the Nkhata Bay West district as one of 42 women serving in the 193 member Malawian parliament.

Sam & Grace, who have been a team for years working on behalf of widows, strengthened those bonds when they were married in July 2011.

The Women Of Grace Widows’ Fund is a joint mission project of the Canton and Watertown Presbyterian Churches dedicated to alleviating the extreme poverty faced by widows in Malawi by providing funding to meet basic food, shelter and safety needs, while creating opportunities and resources that enable and empower widows to establish their own self-sufficiency and independence, regardless of religious affiliation.

This mission program, which is in its third year, was the direct result of a mission trip to Malawi in 2008 by eight North Country women, including Katrina Hebb, Vicki McLain, Ellen Grayson and Linda Potter, all from the Canton church.
