Monday, July 12, 2010 - 9:05 am

CANTON – Godspell, a musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, will be performed by the Grasse River Players at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 15-17 at the Canton First Presbyterian Church on the Park.

Under the leadership of musical director Barbara Burdick and stage director Elaine Kuracina Brehm, the cast of 12 will sing and dance their way through a series of biblical parables including Lazarus and the Rich Man and the Good Samaritan as part of Godspell’s unique account of the life and death of Jesus Christ.

Originally set in a city alley, Grasse River Players brings its retelling closer to home, setting the stage in a typical North Country backyard. Expect soft shoe dancing, upbeat hymns, breathtaking ballads, and lots of toe tapping tunes.

Historical figures include Thomas Aquinas, Jean-Paul Sartre and Buckminster Fuller join Jesus, Lazarus and his disciples to round out the cast of characters in this whimsical production.

General admission is $8. Admission for children under 8 is free. Tickets can be purchased at the Pear Tree in Canton or before the performance at the door.
