CANTON -- Now is the time to plan for small fruit production in your backyard. “Fruit School: Establishing and Maintaining Your Plantings Edition” will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, 3 ½ East Main St..

This is the first in a series with presenter David Rice of Sweetcore Farm and it is focused on apples, blueberries, and raspberries. It is geared towards those who want to establish and/or maintain backyard fruit plantings. Those wishing to create small commercial or homestead orchards and small fruit plantings are also encouraged to attend.

Topics include site selection, soil preparation, varieties and rootstocks for the North Country. Also planting, fertilization, and pest concerns with an eye towards organic solutions. Production supplies and sources will be discussed along with nursery and ordering recommendations.

Group ordering is a potential benefit of participation in this "Fruit School" series of workshops, of which this is the first, designed to cover all of the bases of fruiting trees, bushes and perhaps nuts.

Workshop presenter Dave Rice has a degree in horticulture with a focus on fruit science. He has devoted the past thirty years to fruit and vegetable production, currently as the owner of Sweetcore Farm near Russell, with his wife Kathy.

This event is "part one" of this Back Yard Fruit School series, which also includes Hands On Fruit Tree Pruning in March 2017; Establishing and Maintaining Your Seedlings in April 2017; and, Open House for Trouble Shooting Common Concerns in August 2017.

The cost is $25 general public, $45 couple/family of two, and $12 for students.

Registration is not required, but appreciated.
