COLTON -- The 32nd “Colton Country Days” will be held July 15 through 19 in downtown featuring the always-popular frog jumping contest, kids fishing derby, live music, flea market and fireworks show.

Festivities kick off on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with Alex Smith and Dan Berggren teaming up to perform Adirondack music in the Gazebo located behind the Colton Museum on Main Street.

The rain location is the Pavilion at Swift Field in South Colton. Hotdogs, hamburgers and other goodies will be available to purchase from the Colt’s Pride Booster Club.

The performance is free. A raffle will be held and donations will be accepted to help cover performer fees and other related expenses during the summer.

Crafters, artists, bakers and flea market vendors will be selling their goods from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will also be children’s games, a used book sale, Colton Museum open house and concessions throughout the weekend.

The traditional frog jumping contest gets things started Saturday at the Colton Museum at 9:30 a.m. Register at 9 a.m.

Enjoy the Colton Fire Department’s chicken barbeque at 11 a.m. and listen to the music of the Jack Kelly Little Big Band at noon.

A parade to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Colton Fire Department will be held at 3 p.m.

The museum will be open for people to see a new exhibit honoring the Colton Fire Department as well as posters created through The Sunday Rock Legacy Project about Sunday Rock, early schoolhouses in town, life during World War II and the building of hydroelectric dams on the Raquette River.

Passersby may also want to check out the new barn quilt on the river side of the Museum and learn more about the town’s barn quilt project while visiting the Museum.

The Sock Rock Cabaret will be presented Saturday afternoon by Grasse River Players at the Raquette River Pub on Main Street.

The Sunday Rock Legacy Project is a collaborative effort of the Colton Historical Society, Colton-Pierrepont Central School and the Grasse River Players to embrace local history, education and theatre.

A fireworks show sponsored by the Higley Association will be held Saturday at dusk at the firemen’s field on Gulf Road.

An ice cream social will precede fireworks at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided at 9 p.m. Admission is free but there is charge for food and beverages. Donations toward fireworks will be accepted at the gate. Rain date is July 19.

On Sunday kids can participate in the annual Youth Fishing Derby taking place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m. behind the Colton Town Hall on Main Street. Derby prizes include fishing gear, camping gear, sporting equipment, trophies and gift certificates.

This year the multi-day festivities include three stage presentations of “I Love a Piano” celebrating the music of Irving Berlin from the ragtime era to the 1950s around the time when the hydroelectric dams were being built on the river, forever changing the rhythm of the river and life in the community.

The show is directed by Kimberly Busch for Grass River Players take place in the air-conditioned Colton-Pierrepont Central School Auditorium on Thursday and Friday, July 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door and in advance at White’s General Store, Colton, The TAUNY Center Canton, and the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The Friends of Hepburn Library of Colton will host a used book sale Friday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, July 18, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The sale will be held at the town hall.

Vendors can reserve spaces for $15 for a 10X10 area and $25 for a double space. Info: 265-2524.
