CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Fair Housing Task Force will sponsor a free workshop about landlord best management practices on Tuesday, April 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The event will be held in the 2nd floor conference room of the Human Services Building, 80 State Highway 310.

Panelists will offer advice on what works when renting to tenants, and common pitfalls to avoid. Presenters will include an experienced landlord who manages multiple rental units; a local justice; a municipal code enforcement officer; staff from the County Sherriff's Civil Division; and an attorney from the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York.

“The workshop is intended to give landlords property management advice that is based on the experience of each panelist,” said Matilda M. Larson, a Planner II who staffs the County’s Fair Housing Task Force. “By informing landlords about best management practices, we are striving to protect a tenant’s right to access decent, affordable housing.”

A free sample lease agreement, the Attorney General’s Tenant’s Right Guide, and guidelines to comply with Fair Housing laws will also be distributed to attendees. Landlords who are relatively new to property management are especially invited to participate.

Seating capacity is limited to 40 persons. Landlords interested in attending should register by contacting the 379-2292 or drussell@stlawco.org no later than April 24.
