Free tire drop-off events will take place in St. Lawrence County Apr. 25 and May 9.
The events are being hosted by the St. Lawrence County Highway Department in an effort to clean up the county, protect the environment and reduce the spreading of illnesses by eliminating tires that can act as breeding ground for disease-carrying insects.
Waste tires will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday Apr. 25 at the Canton Human Services Parking Lot, 80 State Highway 310, and at the Massena Transfer Station, 49 Dump Rd. off of State Route 420.
On Saturday, May 9 from 8 a.m. to noon, tires will be accepted at the Gouverneur Transfer Station, l 1831 State Highway 11 and at the Ogdensburg Transfer Station, 522 County Route 28A
Each household will be permitted to dispose of up to eight tires, up to 44 inches in diameter each, with the usual $15 fee being waived. Tractor tires will not be accepted.
Sen. Ritchie said she secured special funding in the state budget to pay for the event.
“One waste tire can act as breeding ground for up to one million disease-carrying mosquitoes. In addition, improper disposal of waste tires—through actions such as burning them—releases harmful, toxic chemicals into the air,” said Ritchie.
