GOUVERNEUR -- Gouverneur Hospital will host a free screening and discussion of the Emmy-nominated PBS Frontline film “Being Mortal,” in partnership with Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
Based on the best-selling book by Dr. Atul Gawande, the documentary explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the physicians who treat them.
The showing will be Nov. 29 at the Gouverneur Hospital in the East Wing Community Room from 1 to 3 p.m.
“This past September we hosted the first screening of ‘Being Mortal’ in partnership with the First Presbyterian Church of Canton”, said Mary Jones, director of family support services for Hospice. “We were hoping for 30 people to attend but when 72 community members arrived we were blown away. The response clearly demonstrated the need to create more opportunities for people to hear this message and begin having these important conversations.
“We want people to think about how far they want to go before they stop treatment, before they want to just be with their family and live out their life … It’s not a bad thing to think about, it’s a healthy thing to do. We’re not advancing one position over the other. We just want people to have the conversation.”
