Recyclable materials may be dropped off at any of the county’s four transfer stations for free Saturday, Nov. 16 in celebration of “America Recycles Day.”
St. Lawrence County operates transfer stations in Gouverneur, Massena, Ogdensburg and Star Lake. Each will be open from 8 a.m. to noon.
Paper, plastic, metal, and glass may be recycled. Waste haulers will pay the usual fees.
“America Recycles Day” was established in 1997 and is celebrated nationally Nov. 15.
In 2012 over 2,000 events were staged across the country for “America Recycles Day” and more than 2 million people participated, collecting over 3.7 million pounds of recyclable materials.
“Our goal for this week is to remind residents that it costs almost nothing to bring your recyclable materials to our transfer stations. We want to promote recycling by all our residents. In St. Lawrence County 35% of our waste stream gets recycled; someday, we hope to reach 65 – 70% recycling rate,” said Scott A. Thornhill, recycling coordinator/operations manager for the Solid Waste Department.
