MASSENA –Massena Memorial Hospital is offering free flu shots to community members from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7 in the hospital’s front lobby.

The first 100 people will be given a free flu shot. People seeking a flu shot must be 19 years old or older.

“MMH is committed to the health of its community and is pleased to offer the free flu shots,” said chief nursing officer Ralene North, RN. “Receiving an annual flu shot helps everyone to remain healthier. Even if you do get the flu you have a better chance of it being less severe.

Some people think that getting a flu shot will make them sick or make them more likely to catch the flu. The flu, also called seasonal influenza, is caused by one of several strains of influenza virus (type A or B) that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu makes life miserable for a week or two for many people, and is deadly for some. Flu season can start as early as October and peak anywhere from late December to early April.

The Center for Disease Control recommends anyone six month or older receive a flu vaccine. It takes two weeks to become fully protected from the flu virus after you are given the vaccine. The flu is approved for pregnant women and people living with chronic medical conditions. Talk to your primary care provider before getting the flu shot.
