Free car seat inspections and education to parents, caregivers to be held Sept. 21

MASSENA -- The St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Program has announced that certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians will be offering free car seat inspections and education to parents and caregivers on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Massena Fire Station, 34 Andrews St.

The event is in conjunction with National Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from Sunday, Sept. 18 to Saturday, Sept. 24.

The week is dedicated to teaching parents and caregivers about the importance of correct installation and use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts.

Parents will also be reminded of the importance of registering car seats with the manufacturer so they can be notified in the event of a recall.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading killer of children, and the latest research from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that 59 percent of car seats are misused.

Parents and caregivers who attend the seat check are asked to bring the car seat instructions and vehicle owner’s manual, if possible.

For more information on child car safety, as well as how to find other car seat check services, contact Mary Davison, St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Specialist, at 379- 2306, or visit www.safercar.gov/parents.
