CANTON – A former St. Lawrence University student and Canton cook who wrote “Captured by the Russians” about his abduction and interrogation by Russians in the 1980s will give a brief talk and book signing at Brewer Bookstore, St. Lawrence University, Saturday, Sept. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Charles Burrall started out working as a dishwasher, then a student cook in Sykes Residence at St. Lawrence. After his sophomore year, he was hired as a cook at the former University Treadway Inn.
He attempted a teaching career, but later chose to travel and write, winding up working on board an Alaskan freighter seized in the Arctic by Soviets. He was then taken to Siberia as a hostage and presumed spy.
