Following alleged hate crime, SUNY Potsdam campus community to discuss the incident and response tonight

POTSDAM -- In light of what have been described as “racist and homophobic threats” against a SUNY Potsdam professor, the campus community will host a discussion on the incident tonight.

The school’s students, faculty and staff will talk about the incident and response at 7:30 p.m. in the Dunn Theater, SUNY Potsdam Dean of Students Chip Morris said Tuesday afternoon.

On Sunday, note was discovered on the office door of a professor who the school is not identifying due to concern for the safety of the person and their family.

“The note contained direct threats against a faculty member and their family, as well as some of the most egregious racist and homophobic language and imagery in existence. It is clear that this message was designed to inflict terror and fear,” Morris said.

See our earlier story for more details.

A litany of law enforcement agencies are now involved, including Potsdam Police, St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, SUNY University Police Commissioner, St. Lawrence County District Attorney's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Morris said.

“There has been an outpouring of campus support in response to this incident. The Diversity in Action Coalition and the Center for Diversity staff have both been meeting to discuss campus response to this issue, and creating an environment where all people feel safe,” Morris said. “This includes developing a support system to accompany students who feel at risk on campus. In addition, the SUNY Potsdam Bias Response Team -- a resource for students, faculty or staff who have experienced a bias-related incident -- is on call and available to help.”
