POTSDAM -- Superstar soprano Renée Fleming, an alumna of SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, will perform in the next The Met: Live in HD opera, Richard Strauss’s “Capriccio,” broadcast at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23 with an encore transmission at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at the Potsdam Roxy.
Fleming is set to sing the role of the elegant Countess Madeleine.
In "Capriccio," Strauss uses the romantic indecision of the widowed Countess -- who is pursued by both a composer and a poet -- as the opportunity for a sophisticated, breezy examination of aesthetics. As she is wooed by both suitors and struggles to choose, the Countess wonders which is more important to musical drama: the music or the written word?
The expected running time is two hours, 45 minutes. The opera will be performed in German, with English subtitles.
Ticket prices are: $18 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, $12 for students and $9 for youth age 18 and under.
Tickets are available by calling the Community Performance Series Box Office at 267-2277, or visiting the Roxy Theater or Northern Music & Video in downtown Potsdam or the CPS Box Office in the lobby of Snell Music Theater. You can also reserve tickets online by visiting www.cpspotsdam.org.
